Eco Remodel Home Improvement

Most buildings already constructed were built without undo attention placed on energy or water efficiency. One of the best investments a person can make is to modify an existing structure to suit their needs for the future.  Remodeling should be done in a eco-friendly way, as the structure will exist for many years to come. An eco remodel of your home can cost more upfront, but the energy saving for the long term will more than pay that investment back.

Is Eco Remodel Right For Me?

Green remodeling practices are slightly more expensive initially.  The purpose of remodeling is to fix something so it doesn’t have to be fixed again.  Making things better in a sustainable way, is remodeling for the long term, which plays into the Green Movement, materials used during the project will not have to be replaced and the energy expended for the eco remodel will not have to be duplicated.

Solutions and Products for Eco Remodel

Spray foam insulation is a serious contender for batt insulation initially cost wise, but is far superior for the long term.
Foam insulation, in the proper depth, acts as an air infiltration inhibitor and the proper foam acts as a vapor barrier. Foam can add rigidity to the structure, sound deadening capability between inside and outside spaces, and performs better than most applications of batt type insulations.
Insulation applied properly can decrease the AC requirements therefore saving money and materials for the life of the structure.
High Efficiency windows with modern glazing techniques greatly reduce heat entering and leaving the building, reducing the load on the AC equipment.
Allowing the sun to enter your home during the day, adding (sky lights or solar tubes) is a remodeling tool that adds natural light, decreasing the need for electric light.
Solar Domestic Hot Water Systems save energy for heating your water and should be consider in every eco remodel strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What would be my best first Eco Remodel project?
Improving the thermal envelope of your building.

What would be the best ways for me to improve the Thermal envelope of my building?
Repairing air leaks between conditioned and unconditioned areas should be a top priority. Efficient windows and doors, sealing and weather  stripping passages between outside and inside and blocking heat transfer from the attic space to the living space quickly will be noticed in energy bills.

Do I need to replace my roof before installing solar panels on an eco remodel job?
If your roofing material has more than 5 years of life in it, don’t wait to install a solar energy system. If you need to replace your roof and want a renewable energy system, spend the money to install a roofing material type that reduces the number of penetrations needed to attach an array to your home.

What type of roofing would you recommend for best energy savings?
Light colored, standing- seam metal  or a light colored roof coating. If installing concrete, clay or stone roofing, install the mounting devices for a solar array to the roof deck before installing the roofing product of your choice.

What type of insulation would you recommend we use for attic and walls?
We recommend closed cell foam for attics and open cell foam for walls. We recommend a blower door test to prove the tightness of the building before the insulation contractor is finished your eco remodel of your home.

Geothermal Air Conditioning

Using the nearly constant temperature of the Earth to absorb heat from and provide heat for buildings is the basis for the most efficient air conditioning systems available today. The temperature of the earth is not dependant on the season, as is the temperature of the air, so using water circulated through the earth as a heat exchange medium gives consistent, efficient results. Water-source or earth-coupled machines can be (and mostly are) installed inside the building, greatly reducing the effects of equipment deterioration due to atmospheric conditions. Earth-coupled machines are used to heat and cool buildings, domestic water systems and pools.
